What is the difference between electronic signature, digital signature, and manual signature?

Posted On 09-Oct-2021

Every day and in every spot in which a person breathes on this planet, he gives consent for something to use a means of signature. Many documents and papers are signed, and each person has his own preferences of making these signatures, some of which are: what is done manually, and some are done electronically. We will talk about these methods in this blog. Continue reading.

Let’s start with Manual signatures.

Manual signature:

It is one of the oldest and most common ways of signing and has been used for centuries. It is to use a paper and a pen to express your consent to something with your own distinctive mark, such as using your name or if the signer is illiterate, he can use a fingerprint.

These traditional signatures have forms such as cursive writing, normal writing, a symbol, or a letter, and some use their own seals to sign checks, contracts...etc.

These signatures have a lower security level than others as they may not be spared from attempts of forgery and tampering. Sometimes the presence of a witness to the signature is required, who may later forget the signing proceedings.

Electronic signatures:

They are the signatures that use electronic devices to enter the signature, which is, in forms, including a written line, a symbol, or a voice signature. It provides high security and data integrity to its users where no one can tamper or make any changes to it as it uses encryption technology.

The need for electronic signatures began with the huge technological revolution that entered all fields, provided the element of comfort, and facilitated tasks for people. Also, to overcome the bad side of manual signatures, which sometimes lack security and accuracy, in addition some problems related to the misuse of papers and inks.

Electronic devices such as smart mobile devices, tablet input devices, or computers support using electronic signatures.

You can add your signature through the device you want: after the entry process, you click on the done button to save the contract, deal, or document.

The electronic signature uses the PKI system, which is a system that provides a well-secured environment for the files. It protects them from dangers and attempts of forgery and tampering.

Signing documents and contracts using the electronic way saves efforts, increases productivity, and reduces the material cost resulting from the use of papers, inks, and printing machines. You can invest these costs in creating new advantages for your company and promoting it.

Digital signature:

A modern method in the security and preservation of electronically signed documents, characterized by being highly secure and accurate.

Digital signatures allow you to sign after obtaining a certificate from the CA certification authority. This is to ensure the document belongs to you and to authenticate your data. You can also identify the sender and the receiver with high levels of encryption and data preservation.

You may now be wondering about the difference between digital signatures and electronic signatures, even though they are both implemented electronically.

The electronic signature is nothing but a simulation of manual signature. Instead of using papers and pens in signing, only electronic devices are used, and the signature is inserted in them. However, this type of signature, due to its connection with modern technologies, gives higher security and accuracy of data than its manual counterpart.

As for the digital signature, it differs in the method. You do not have to enter your signature. It is mainly based on the core, which is a mathematical algorithm that ensures the safety of data transmitted over the Internet and preserves it from falsification of documents.

In any case, signatures of different types give a legal obligation to the content of the signed documents. However, there are recent preferences and trends to abandon manual paper signatures because it has been proven that they have a lower level of protection and data security than other forms of electronic signature. Its feasibility and security levels are much higher, and it has many advantages such as providing convenience, and saving costs and efforts.
